Stop-Motion Animation Stage Building Instructions – 2

Version #2- For use with phones and tablets. Simplest and fastest to make with recycled materials. Cardboard cutter or utility blade required.

Materials Needed:

2 tall Soda/Water bottles (2L or about 12” high); Piece of stiff cardboard about 20×6”; 2 rubber bands; Smartphone or tablet

Tools Needed:

Utility knife (left, not safe for small children); or serrated cardboard cutter (right, less precise but safe for use by children)

Step 5

Step 1

Cut a piece of cardboard between 16-20” long and about 6” wide (wider if you are using a tablet). Make sure not to bend it at all or it will not stay rigid.

Step 2

Measure and mark where you will cut holes for the bottle tops on either end of the cardboard. About 1.5” in from the edge and centered width-wise should work. A cross with two straight cuts is the easiest. You can also try to cut a circle the size of the caps of your bottles.

Step 3

Expand the hole a little bit by sticking your finger through it.

Step 4

Now measure and mark the very center point of your cardboard piece and cut a small hole about ½” square. This is where the camera on your phone or tablet will be placed.

Step 5

Put the two rubber bands on the narrower side of the cardboard. Then place your two bottles about the width of your cardboard apart and slide the cardboard stage over the bottle tops. Place the phone or tablet with the camera centered on the middle hole and secure the phone with the two rubber bands so it doesn’t slip around while you make your movie.

You’re Done! Now make some stop-motion animation movies!
